Free Cooker Collection and Removal
New kitchen, or a cooker that’s finally given up? Old cookers are mostly steel, so local scrap collectors will usually take them away for free, from small electric ovens to big range cookers. Tell us what you’ve got, and a licensed collector near you will pick it up.
Gas, electric or dual fuel?
Pick your cooker type to see who needs to disconnect it before collection.
Gas cooker
Gas cookers must be disconnected and capped off by a Gas Safe registered engineer before collection. It’s illegal for anyone else to do work on gas fittings, and collectors won’t do it.

If it plugs into a normal socket, just unplug it. Many electric cookers are wired into their own circuit instead, so get a qualified electrician to disconnect it.
Who disconnects it: Electrician if hard-wiredDual fuel cooker
A gas hob with an electric oven needs both: a Gas Safe engineer for the gas, and an electrician if the oven is hard-wired. Many installers do both when fitting the new one.

Frequently asked questions
Is cooker collection really free?
Yes, in most cases. Cookers are mostly steel, with some copper and other metals, so local scrap collectors will usually take them for free. A collector covering your postcode picks it up from your home.
Will the collector disconnect my gas cooker?
No. Work on gas fittings must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, so a gas cooker needs to be safely disconnected and capped off before collection. The installer of your new cooker can usually do this.
What about electric cookers?
Many electric cookers are wired into their own circuit rather than plugged in. If yours is, get a qualified electrician to disconnect it safely before collection.
Do you take range cookers?
Yes. Range cookers are very heavy, so a collector with a van makes life much easier. Mention it’s a range cooker on the form so the collector comes prepared.
Do you take built-in ovens and hobs?
Yes. Built-in ovens, hobs, grills and metal cooker hoods can all be collected once they’ve been safely disconnected and taken out.
Won’t the shop take my old cooker away?
When you buy a new cooker, the retailer has to offer a free way to take your old one back, but that might be in-store or through a scheme rather than from your home. A local collector can take it if not.
Do I need to be home?
Not always. If you leave the cooker on your driveway or front garden, many collectors can pick it up without you being in. Say so on the request form.
Are the collectors licensed?
Collectors on Scrap4Free must hold a valid waste carrier registration, which we check against the public register. Scrap metal collectors also need a licence from their local council, and by law scrap metal can’t be paid for in cash in England, Wales or Scotland.
