Frequently asked questions
Is scrap metal collection really free in Liverpool?
Yes, collection is free for most ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal across Liverpool, including washing machines, cookers, boilers, radiators and general metal waste. A small charge may apply to fridges and freezers because of the specialist disposal needed for their cooling gases.
How does Scrap4Free work?
You send a request with your postcode and what you’ve got. We match you with a collector who covers your area, and they contact you to arrange a time.
Liverpool council’s bulky collection is free. Why use Scrap4Free?
The council collects up to five bulky items from homes, but it won’t collect from landlord or To Let properties or business premises, and it doesn’t do house clearances. Scrap4Free collectors take scrap metal from homes, landlords and businesses, usually for free.
Can I take a van to a Liverpool tip?
Only with a booking, made in advance. The Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority limits vans to 2 visits a week and 12 a year, and hire van drivers must bring the hire agreement.
Can businesses use the tip in Liverpool?
No. Merseyside’s recycling centres only accept household waste, and staff can refuse entry if the waste looks like it’s from a trade or business. Businesses can request a scrap metal collection through Scrap4Free instead.
Can landlords get appliances collected from rentals?
Yes. Landlords and letting agents can request collection of cookers, washing machines and other metal left behind, and collectors can give a waste transfer note for your records.
I’ve got more than scrap metal. Can you clear the lot?
Yes. For furniture, general waste or a full house clearance, see our house clearance Liverpool page. Collectors agree a price with you first, and the metal can help bring it down.
Are the collectors licensed?
Collectors on Scrap4Free must hold a valid Environment Agency waste carrier registration, which we check against the public register. Scrap metal collectors also need a collector’s licence from their council, which is Liverpool City Council, or Sefton Council for Bootle.
